The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, indicated that the municipality was ready for a confrontation with President Donald Trump over his claim that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup matches from the stadium in Foxborough, located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the city.

Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast recently to answer comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "radical left." President Trump had warned that he would call the head of FIFA if Boston did not "improve its situation."

Much of it is locked down by agreement so that no single person, even the president, can undo it.

Wu continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are issued at people and cities who stand their ground and comply or follow along to a hateful agenda."

She further stated, "We will keep being who we are, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting Boston's values." Wu concluded by stressing her commitment for the Boston, declaring, "Fully committed for Boston."

The President's Comments and FIFA Involvement

Recently, Infantino was photographed with Trump at the Gaza summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also been to the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and club championship awards to Trump as gifts.

On Tuesday, Trump was asked about unrest in South Boston that involved a police car being burned. Trump replied, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Infantino – the head of FIFA, who's great."

Trump added, "I'd tell him: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He might not prefer it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also specifically targeted Mayor Wu, stating, "Their mayor is not good ... she's radical left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"

Past Threats and Upcoming Tournament Information

President Trump has previously suggested that he would take the same conversation with the FIFA president about moving games from other host cities, which are among the 16 locations across North America.

The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be played from June 11 to July 19 next summer.
