California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he will decide on whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections conclude.
"Yes, I would be lying otherwise," the governor stated when pressed about giving serious thought to a campaign for president after the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."
Newsom's time in office as California's leader wraps up in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he noted that any determination is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
Newsom has emerged as a prominent adversary of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and pushing a proposition that would expand the party's congressional seats in response to redistricting by Republicans. This action has made him a target from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a recent segment on Fox News. Duffy announced a strategy to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and warned suspending the power to provide CDLs.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," Duffy declared, in the wake of a recent tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented trucker that led to fatalities and four injuries.
The governor's team noted that the national authorities had approved the individual's authorization repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a commercial driver's license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had before stated he was blocking $40 million from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Administration
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration responded in a previous statement addressing the funding warnings. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."
Public Opinion and Political Future
A recently conducted study found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom must consider running for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has increased to an typical level of 33.5% from previous levels, while his unfavorability has dropped from an mean of previous highs to 38.4%.
Some time ago, Newsom commented while on a trip several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for 2028.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.
"The idea that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he stated. "No one can say? I await who emerges in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
