RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
