Far-Right Ex- Congressman José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile New Leader.
After a definitive final ballot, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Commanding Victory
With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having in the past been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Governing Without a Clear Majority
Despite his sweeping popular vote triumph, Kast will not hold an overall majority in the legislature, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even if various right-leaning parties are combined together.
This political situation could challenge his plans, such as a promise to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.
"There are several aspects about how a Kast government will operate that remain unclear because he has not explained how he will do them," said a political science professor.
The expert stated, "On fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. But the area with much less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his central theme during the campaign."
