No major competition markets competitive balance like the NFL: it's their core marketing message. Yet following the first ten matchups of this season, this isn’t a league that is equally balanced among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. The four teams leading their divisions at this stage: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (5-4 record). Read that again. No Chiefs presence. No Bills inclusion. Not the Ravens or Bengals. The usual contenders, backed by the league’s best quarterbacks, possess either obvious team deficiencies or are dealing with health issues.

To some extent, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. Yet observing this year’s four division leaders in the AFC continues to seem unusual. Aspects of each franchise pass the championship smell test, though not comprehensively. Indianapolis Outlook

Beginning with the Colts, the signal-caller hasn't yet achieved total collapse. Yet the past two games have caused alarm. He's reverting to committing turnovers and failing against blitzes. He took seven sacks facing Atlanta during Sunday's contest, and experienced a five-minute stretch during which he tossed an intercepted pass and coughed up the ball thrice. Considering the Ravens opened with a 1-5 record and currently seem capable of division victory speaks volumes regarding the complete conference.

Traditional Powers

The Ravens represent a segment among three elite teams – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – driven by elite quarterback play, that would continue to generate the most fear in opposing teams if they qualified. They’re the No One Wants To See ‘Em teams, but the Chiefs and Bills persistently undermine themselves.
