Japan's Economic Output Shrinks as Overseas Sales Are Hit by US Trade Duties

The Japanese economic system has experienced a contraction for the initial time in six quarters, mainly caused by declining exports because of recent American trade duties.

Group of Seven Economic Standings

The Japanese economy has become the initial G7 nation to announce an GDP decline in the most recent quarter.

With the US yet to release its gross domestic product figures for Q3 2025, the current Group of Seven economic standings display:

  • France: +0.5% quarterly growth
  • United Kingdom: +0.1%
  • Canada: 0.1 percent (provisional estimate)
  • German economy: 0%
  • Italy: 0%
  • Japan: -0.4%

Travel Stocks Decline during Political Dispute with China

In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is experiencing an escalating diplomatic tension with China concerning Taiwan.

Stocks in Japan's travel and consumer companies have dropped noticeably after China urged its nationals to refrain from visiting to Japan.

This action by Chinese authorities intensified a diplomatic feud that was sparked by statements from Japan's recently appointed prime minister about the potential of sending troops in the case of a hypothetical Chinese invasion on Taiwan.

The situation caused a wave of selling across Japan's tourism-related shares.

  • Oriental Land stock dropped by 5.7 percent
  • Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3 percent
  • Japan Airlines fell by 3.75 percent

"The China-Japan dispute over Taiwan and Beijing's advisory discouraging visits to Japan brings short-term headwinds for retail and hospitality sectors.

"Chinese visitors represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's international visitors, making department stores, luxury retail, and tourism services particularly at risk."

Economic Contraction Details

Japan's gross domestic product declined by 0.4% in the third quarter, as industrial overseas shipments were impacted by tariffs levied by the United States recently.

Exports were a key driver of the decline, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.

Previously, the American government had proposed Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15 percent when the two nations concluded a trade deal.

Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.

On an annualized basis, Japan's real gross domestic product contracted by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.

"Japan's economy was solid in the initial six months of this year and today's GDP figures showed that momentum is paused for now.

I expect Japan's economy to be back on a gradual recovery trend going forward."

The US administration has lately acknowledged the effect of tariffs on Americans, lowering tariffs on imported food products including meat, produce, beverages and bananas amid growing concerns about increasing costs.
