Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
