Patrick Bamford Signs With the Blades Despite Initiating Derogatory Chants Targeting Coach Wilder

Patrick Bamford is now a member of Sheffield United just seven months following instigating insulting taunts aimed at the team's coach, Wilder.

The 32-year-old striker, without a club since leaving Leeds, has put pen to paper on a contract joining the second-tier club in difficulty until January. Bamford's seven-year time with Leeds was ended by mutual consent this past summer.

One of Bamford’s last memorable actions while at Leeds was to lead abusive chants about Chris Wilder amid the club’s success festivities this spring. Now, the one-cap England international will be playing under Wilder as Sheffield United's boss aims to pull the team he loves away from the drop zone.

Past History Between the Striker and the Manager

The pair had history prior to Leeds moved up back to the Premier League last season while Sheffield United were defeated in the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder called the forward as a "muppet" back when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and the Blades secured direct promotion whereas Leeds fell short in the playoffs.

Making Amends & Looking Ahead

All seems to have been forgiven and forgotten with United, the league's lowest scorers, urgently requiring of a boost up front and Bamford hoping to revive his career.

The Wilder chant spread widely in April. A repentant Patrick and the Leeds manager, Farke, called Wilder the following day.

Chris Wilder commented at the time: “Spoke with Patrick yesterday and I’ve no issue at all with that. I'm uncertain about the language from a fellow pro! But I appreciated and admired him giving me a call.

“We spent 20 minutes and the same again I spoke to Daniel as well and we had a longer discussion with him and he is a super guy, a top guy. When I was playing we would give it and take it and that is an integral part of the game across all levels, including a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I am cool with it and I told him that to Patrick.”

Recent Career Struggles

Bamford made 18 appearances with Leeds United last season but the ex- Forest, Chelsea FC & Middlesbrough striker has faced difficulties with fitness issues in recent years.
