The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people perished and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
