Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a venue that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 defeats. This year will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
