The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
