By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the box could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to become stronger.
