Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.

These terminations took place on the very day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
