Meanwhile, a region famed for its clear skies and plentiful sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast weeks on recorded history. A specific type of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The extended fog has been driven by exceptional fall rainfall that resulted in the ground saturated.
