Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
